Chest Fly Machine
The chest fly machine, also called the pec deck, is a seated isolation exercise where you bring two handles or arm pads together in front of your chest with a slight elbow bend. The fixed arc keeps constant tension on the pecs and removes the triceps and balance from the movement, making it a straightforward way to isolate the chest.

What muscles does the chest fly machine work?
Primary movers
- Pectoralis major
Assisting muscles
- Anterior deltoid
- Biceps brachii (short head)
- Serratus anterior
The pec major pulls the arms across the body. The machine keeps the load aligned with that action throughout, so the muscle works from the stretch to the squeeze.
The triceps barely contribute, which sets it apart from presses. That makes the fly machine a pure chest finisher after heavy presses.
Seat height matters. Handles at shoulder height or just below target the mid chest, while lower handles emphasise the lower chest.
The deep stretch at the start is the useful part, but going too far back can strain the front of the shoulder. Set the arms so you stop at a comfortable stretch.

Common chest fly machine mistakes
Pushing with the hands
Pressing the handles turns it into a press and brings in the triceps.
The fix: Think of hugging a barrel and keep the elbows fixed.
Going too far back
Over-stretching strains the front of the shoulder.
The fix: Stop when you feel a good stretch and set the arm limiter if there is one.
Shrugging
Raised shoulders put the traps in the movement.
The fix: Keep your shoulders down and chest up.
Using too much weight
Heavy loads cut the range and bring in momentum.
The fix: Choose a weight you can control for 10 to 15 reps.
How many sets and reps?
| Goal | Sets | Reps | Load | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hypertrophy | 3 | 10–15 | Moderate, 1–2 RIR | 60–90 s |
| Finisher | 2–3 | 12–20 | Light to moderate | 45–60 s |
| Beginner | 2 | 12 | Light | 60 s |
Use it after your main presses, as it is a great finisher for the chest. Pause for a second at the squeeze. Add weight when you reach the top of the rep range with a full range.

Frequently asked questions
What does the pec deck work?
The pectoralis major, with the front delts and biceps helping.
Is the pec deck better than dumbbell flyes?
It is easier to learn and keeps tension through the range. Dumbbells load the stretch more. Both build the chest.
How do I set the seat?
So the handles are at shoulder height or just below when your arms are extended.
Is the pec deck bad for shoulders?
It can be if you over-stretch at the start. Limit the range to a comfortable stretch.
How many reps should I do?
10 to 15 reps works well, with a slow return and a squeeze at the centre.
