Smith Machine Incline Bench Press
The Smith machine incline bench press is an upper-chest press where you lie on an incline bench and push a barbell that slides on fixed rails. The 30 to 45 degree angle shifts load toward the upper chest and front delts, and the guided bar lets you train hard without a spotter.

What muscles does the smith machine incline bench press work?
Primary movers
- Pectoralis major (clavicular)
- Anterior deltoid
- Triceps brachii
Assisting muscles
- Pectoralis major (sternal)
- Serratus anterior
An incline puts the upper chest fibres, the clavicular head, in line with the push. The front delts also share more of the load than on a flat press.
The Smith bar's fixed path takes balance out of the equation, which can make it easier to feel the upper chest working. It also lets you push to failure alone using the hooks.
Bench angle matters. Around 30 degrees targets the upper chest well, while steeper angles shift too much load onto the shoulders.
On an incline, the bar's vertical path can feel unnatural. Move the bench slightly forward or back until the bar lands on your upper chest.

Common smith machine incline bench press mistakes
Bench angle too steep
Above 45 degrees the shoulders do most of the pressing.
The fix: Stay between 30 and 40 degrees.
Bench in the wrong position
The bar then comes down on your neck or lower chest.
The fix: Adjust until the bar lands on your upper chest.
Letting the shoulders roll forward
Protracted shoulders reduce chest work and strain the joint.
The fix: Keep your shoulder blades pinned back and down.
Bouncing
Using the chest as a trampoline removes control.
The fix: Lower with a pause and press smoothly.

Frequently asked questions
What angle should I use for the Smith machine incline press?
Around 30 degrees works best for the upper chest. Higher angles shift work to the shoulders.
Is the Smith incline press good for upper chest?
Yes. The incline and the fixed path let you load the upper chest with little balance demand.
Where should the bar land?
On your upper chest, just below the collarbones. Adjust the bench position to make that happen.
Smith incline or dumbbell incline?
Dumbbells give a bigger stretch and independent arms. The Smith machine is more stable and easier to train alone. Both work.
Is it safer than a free barbell?
The hooks let you rack the bar anywhere, which makes failure safer. Still use a sensible weight and good form.
