Smith Machine Hack Squat

The Smith machine hack squat is a squat variation where the bar rests on your upper back and your feet are placed in front of the bar path, so you lean against the bar as you descend. This keeps your torso upright and shifts load to the quads, like a hack squat machine, with the Smith rails for safety.

What muscles does the smith machine hack squat work?

Primary movers

  • Quadriceps

Assisting muscles

  • Gluteus maximus
  • Adductors
  • Hamstrings
  • Calves

With your feet in front of the bar path, the bar travels straight down while your hips move back and down behind it. This puts the torso more upright and the knees further forward, which emphasises the quads.

The fixed path takes balance out of the movement, so you can focus on pushing through the legs and train to failure with built-in safeties.

The glutes and adductors help drive you up, and the hamstrings work to control the knee. Calves stabilise at the ankle.

This stance is not natural for everyone. Start with a modest foot position in front of the bar and adjust until you feel stable.
