Plank Shoulder Taps

Plank shoulder taps are a core exercise where you hold a high plank and alternately lift one hand to tap the opposite shoulder. The goal is to keep your hips completely still, so the abs, obliques and glutes work to resist rotation while your shoulders stabilise your body weight.

What muscles does the plank shoulder taps work?

Primary movers

  • Rectus abdominis
  • Obliques

Assisting muscles

  • Transverse abdominis
  • Anterior deltoid
  • Serratus anterior
  • Gluteus maximus
  • Pectoralis major

The core muscles are the target. Each time a hand lifts, your body wants to rotate toward the side with no support. The obliques and deep abdominals stop that twist, which is a type of anti-rotation training.

The rectus abdominis and glutes hold the plank line so your hips do not sag or pike. The glutes squeeze helps keep the pelvis level while one arm is moving.

The supporting shoulder works hard. The serratus anterior, front delt and chest keep the supporting arm steady, and the shoulder takes more of your weight each time the other hand lifts.

Foot position changes the challenge. Wider feet create a bigger base and make the exercise easier, while a narrow stance makes it harder. Move slowly, because speed usually makes the hips rock and removes the point of the exercise.

How to do the plank shoulder taps

Setup

  1. 1

Get into a high plank with your hands under your shoulders.

  2. 2

Set your feet about hip-width apart, or wider to make it easier.

  3. 3

Brace your core and squeeze your glutes so your hips stay level.

  4. 4

Keep your neck long and look at the floor between your hands.

Execution

  1. 1

Shift a little weight to your supporting hand without moving your hips.

  2. 2

Lift one hand and tap the opposite shoulder.

  3. 3

Place the hand back down under your shoulder.

  4. 4

Repeat with the other hand, alternating sides.

  5. 5

Move slowly and keep your hips as still as if a glass of water sat on your lower back.

  6. 6

Each tap, left or right, counts as one rep.

Common plank shoulder taps mistakes

Rocking the hips side to side

Swaying means the core is not resisting rotation, so the exercise loses its purpose.

The fix: Widen your feet and slow down until your hips stay still.

Letting the hips sag or pike

A broken plank line strains the lower back and reduces the core work.

The fix: Squeeze your glutes and brace your abs to hold a straight line.

Rushing the taps

Speed brings momentum and lets the trunk twist.

The fix: Tap slowly and with control, pausing for a moment on each side.

Placing the hands in front of the shoulders

Hands too far forward make the shoulders and wrists work harder in a poor position.

The fix: Keep your hands directly under your shoulders.

Use plank shoulder taps as a core finisher or as part of a warm-up, after you can hold a plank for 30 seconds. Quality counts more than speed. Stop a set when your hips begin to sway.
