Kettlebell Front Squat
The kettlebell front squat is a squat with one or two kettlebells held in the rack position at your shoulders. The front load keeps your torso upright and heavily trains the quads, glutes and core, while two bells let you go heavier than a goblet squat. It is a strong lower body and core builder that needs only kettlebells.

What muscles does the kettlebell front squat work?
Primary movers
- Quadriceps
- Gluteus maximus
Assisting muscles
- Adductors
- Core
- Upper back
- Erector spinae
The quads do the most work, driving the knee extension out of the bottom, with the glutes finishing the hip extension. The front load shifts more work onto the quads than a back squat.
The rack position places the kettlebells on your forearms and chest. The core and upper back have to hold you upright against that front load, which makes them work harder than in a goblet squat.
Two kettlebells give a heavier, more balanced load than one. They also hang naturally by your shoulders, which many people find more comfortable than a barbell front squat.
The exercise is limited by how well you can hold the rack position. If your wrists or shoulders complain, a goblet squat is a good alternative.

Common kettlebell front squat mistakes
Elbows dropping
Dropping the elbows pulls the bells forward and rounds your upper back.
The fix: Keep your elbows high and tight against your ribs.
Wrists bending
Cocked wrists strain the joints and make the bells feel heavier.
The fix: Keep the handles aligned with your forearms and your wrists straight.
Kettlebells bruising your forearms
Poor positioning lets the bells bang on your forearms.
The fix: Settle the bells on your chest and arms and keep them still throughout.
Leaning forward
Folding forward turns the lift into a hinge and removes quad work.
The fix: Keep your chest up and sit between your knees.

Frequently asked questions
What is the rack position?
Kettlebells resting on your forearms and chest, elbows tucked, wrists straight.
Is it harder than a goblet squat?
Yes. Two bells allow heavier weight and the rack position challenges your core and upper back more.
Can I use one kettlebell?
Yes. One bell held in the rack on one side works, but the load is uneven, so swap sides each set.
How heavy should I go?
Pick bells you can squat for 8 to 12 reps with a tall chest.
Does it build quads?
Yes. The upright front-loaded position puts a lot of work on the quads.
